Formulary buying across many distributors
Our work · Healthcare

Formulary purchasing across many distributors.

A multi-tenant platform that lets independent pharmacies manage formulary-based drug purchasing across multiple distributors. Off-the-shelf procurement software doesn't fit how pharmacies buy, so we built one that does, and we've kept it in continuous development for roughly a decade.

01 The problem

Procurement software doesn't buy like a pharmacy.

Independent pharmacies buy against a formulary, from more than one distributor, at prices that change constantly. They need to see what's on formulary and what isn't at the moment of checkout, order across vendors, and keep every order and acknowledgment straight. Generic procurement and ERP software isn't built for any of that.

The operator behind the platform serves many independent pharmacies at once and had no internal development team. They needed one system that could handle formulary purchasing for all of them, speak directly to the distributors, and give each pharmacy its own view.

Formulary rules, multiple distributors, and prices that move all land at the moment someone clicks buy. The software has to be right exactly then.

02 What we built

One multi-tenant platform, wired to the distributors.

A custom purchasing platform built for how pharmacies actually buy: formulary-aware ordering, direct EDI to major distributors, and a multi-tenant structure that serves many pharmacies from one system.

Formulary

Formulary-aware checkout

Formulary and non-formulary items distinguished at checkout, with item pricing, so buyers see what's covered before they order.

Integrations

Wired to the distributors

Multi-vendor EDI integrations with major pharmaceutical distributors, exchanging orders, acknowledgments, and ship notices, plus price-file ingestion.

Ordering

Cart to purchase order

Order management with a cart, single-vendor checkout, purchase-order email, order history, 90-day views, favorites, and transaction reporting.

Multi-tenant

One platform, many pharmacies

A parent and child account hierarchy that runs many independent pharmacies on one platform, each kept separate.

White-label

Each pharmacy's own front

Per-customer white-label configuration, so every pharmacy sees the platform as its own.

03 Under the hood

Proven technology, chosen on purpose.

Almost everything we ship runs on the same modern Microsoft stack: proven, supported, and easy to hire for years from now. Cutting edge but never bleeding edge.

The platform speaks EDI directly to major pharmaceutical distributors, exchanging purchase orders, acknowledgments, and ship notices (the 850, 855, and 856 transaction sets), and ingests each distributor's price files so pharmacies always buy against current pricing.

04 The long run

Multi-tenant, and still growing a decade in.

This is multi-tenant at its core: a parent and child account hierarchy that runs many independent pharmacies on one platform, each with its own white-label configuration. It speaks EDI to major distributors, ingests their price files, and has stayed in continuous development for roughly a decade.
