Fifteen years as their software team

Fifteen years as a national association's software team.

NPCA is a national trade association for the precast concrete industry, running membership, plant certification, and events for the whole field. For more than fifteen years we were its software team, and we built Phoenix, a custom association management system that replaced the off-the-shelf platform the association had outgrown.

01 The problem

The AMS handled dues and stopped at certification.

A national trade association runs on more than a membership list. NPCA manages member plants and contacts, a plant-certification program its whole industry relies on, and a national trade show every year. All of it had to live on one platform that staff and members could trust.

The packaged association management system they ran on was built for the general case. It managed dues and records, then broke on the part that made the association matter: a certification program with a multi-stage audit and inspection workflow. And there was no internal development team to close the gap. They needed a system shaped like their operation, and a partner to own it for the long haul.

Certification is where a trade association earns its authority. It's also the piece no off-the-shelf AMS is built to run, which is why NPCA came to us to build it right.

02 What we built

Phoenix: one platform for the whole association.

Phoenix is a custom association management system we built to replace the packaged AMS: membership, certification, events, and a member portal, all on one platform designed around how the association actually works.

Membership

Plants, contacts, and dues

Member plant and contact records, dues, and renewals, managed together as one source of truth for the association's staff.

Certification

A multi-stage audit workflow

The plant-certification program, built around a multi-stage audit and inspection workflow. This is the differentiator, and the part off-the-shelf software couldn't carry.

Events

Trade show and registration

Event and annual trade-show registration for the full membership, wired to the show platforms the association already used.

Member portal

myNPCA

A member portal where plants and their contacts manage their own records, renewals, and certification in one place.

Reporting

A reporting engine with export

A custom reporting engine with CSV export, so staff pull the numbers they need without waiting on a developer.

Education

Enrollment and classes

Student enrollment and class management for a quality-seal program, run on the same platform as everything else.

03 Under the hood

Proven technology, chosen on purpose.

Almost everything we ship runs on the same modern Microsoft stack: proven, supported, and easy to hire for years from now. Cutting edge but never bleeding edge.

.NETSQL ServerMicrosoft Azure

Phoenix connected to the tools the operation already ran on: Map Your Show and Maritz Decision Point for the annual trade show, SmartyStreets for address verification, and PayPal for payments.

04 The long run

The software counterpart for a national association.

Off-the-shelf association software handles dues and stops at the rules that make an association its own. NPCA's edge was certification, and that's exactly the part a packaged AMS couldn't carry. Phoenix ran membership, certification, events, and the member portal on one platform, and we owned it as their software team for more than fifteen years.
