We recently spoke with Ryan Fischer, Director of Operations at NVMS, about what it takes to coordinate a nationwide network of independent contractors and how contractor tech is transforming this process.
Spoiler alert: it’s not easy. But it is possible, especially when the right tech and the right mindset come together.
NVMS operates a vast network of 1099 field contractors, each managing their own time, tools, and territory. That’s thousands of inspections, site visits, and services happening across the country every single day.
“Our network is all independent contractors,” Ryan told us. “So, from an operations perspective, the challenge is providing efficient data collection tools, processes, and procedures that the network will adopt, while also satisfying client requirements for each service or inspection.”
In other words, it’s not just about checking boxes—it’s about meeting real client expectations while working with professionals who each bring their own way of doing things. No small feat.
When NVMS knew it was time for a better system, they weren’t looking for a plug-and-play product. They were looking for a partner.
“The key word is partner,” Ryan said. “Our industry is fairly niche. It was important to have a tech partner that would listen to our challenges, then craft a novel solution suited to our needs.”
That’s where our collaboration began, with a shared curiosity and a willingness to ask, “What could this look like if we built it right?”
Together, we co-developed a mobile app designed not just for NVMS’s internal team, but for the contractors out in the field. From day one, the goal was simple: make the job easier and more efficient for everyone.
The app does just that. It improves the user experience, helps contractors organize their day, and gets deliverables to NVMS clients faster and more accurately. One standout feature lets contractors see available orders near their current location, making it easy to pick up new jobs on the go.
That kind of real-time efficiency wasn’t just a nice-to-have; it was a game-changer.
One of our favorite moments during development was a conversation between Ryan and Jason, one our Counterpart partners. Jason described the mobile build like a layer cake, each layer added with care, supporting the one above it. It’s an image that stuck with Ryan, and with us.
Because good software isn’t just about function. It’s about thoughtful design, intentional structure, and building something that lasts.
“We’ve got some great ideas in the incubator for sure,” Ryan shared. “So, stay tuned! Mobile app v1.0 is just the first step.” And we believe it. NVMS is the kind of organization that’s always looking ahead—and now, with a smarter mobile foundation, the possibilities are wide open.
At Counterpart, we’re proud to support teams like NVMS, teams that know their business inside and out, and want to build tech that actually fits. It’s what partnership looks like and what we love to do.
