Learning Portrait: Rethinking How We See Student Success

For decades, classrooms have been ruled by the familiar A-F grading scale. It’s neat, simple, and let’s be honest, a little too limiting. A single letter can’t tell the story of why a student is excelling in one subject or struggling in another. It can’t capture the depth of their progress, the evidence of their hard work, or the moments when a concept finally clicks.

Learning Portrait is changing that.

Learning Portrait is a simple, flexible, and empowering tool for teachers, students, and parents to track learning in a way that goes far beyond a letter grade. It supports innovative teaching practices by making learning conversations more evidence-based and personal.

Beyond the Grade: Evidence Over Symbols

Instead of simply recording that a student got a “B” on a test, Learning Portrait focuses on the why behind the performance. Students and teachers can both upload evidence: tests, projects, homework, personal reflections, and other learning experiences to show mastery of a concept.

Students rate themselves on how well they understand something, and teachers provide their rating. When those ratings align, the student can move forward with confidence. This shared approach turns learning into a collaboration rather than a one-way evaluation.

A Dashboard for Every Role

  • Teachers get a clear dashboard to see progress across all students, spot where extra support is needed, and celebrate successes with evidence to back it up.
  • Students can see exactly what they’re aiming for, track their growth, and have a voice in their learning journey.
  • Parents have their access, giving them a transparent view into what’s being learned and how their child is progressing.

The result? More clarity, more ownership, and fewer “I had no idea” moments.

Launching with Teachers First

Before rolling Learning Portrait out to entire districts, the Learning Portrait team wanted to be sure it truly makes teachers’ lives easier. That’s why they chose to begin with a beta launch for individual teachers.

This phase isn’t just about finding bugs or fixing small issues; it’s about listening and ensuring market validation. The team is working closely with teacher beta testers to identify the top five priorities for improvement before we move toward an enterprise package for schools and districts.

This is just one of the ways we ensure our products aren’t just functional, but meaningful, practical, and ready for the real world.

Why This Matters

Grading is evolving. Schools and districts are embracing more verbal, conversational, and subjective scales that reflect a student’s journey, not just the destination. Learning Portrait fits right into that shift by giving everyone (teachers, students, and parents) a tool to track learning in context, supported by real evidence.

With Learning Portrait, we’re not replacing grades. We’re making them mean more.

We believe the best tools are built alongside the people who use them. The Learning Portrait beta launch is just the beginning. It’s a chance to listen, learn, and refine before bringing it to entire districts. This is how we build products that don’t just work, but truly make a difference in the classroom.

Have an idea to bring to life? Let’s build it together.
